This year I even signed up for a class. 'Beginning Ayurveda' by Dr. Claudia Welch. I am only 1 week in and though I have had lots of exposure to the science of Ayurveda in the past, I am loving her approach. As I was reading through today's chapters 1 in particular stood out as something worth sharing with all of you, especially as we move into Fall and could all use a little extra nourishment- Abhyanga (oil) Massage. <br />
<br />
Oil massage has been used for thousands of years in many different traditional healing modalities and Ayurveda is no different. This time of year things are getting dry and windy, we can have a tendency to feel anxious or stressed, have dry skin, trouble sleeping- while oil massage can be practiced year round it can be super beneficial when we are feeling depleted and in need of warmth and nourishment, particularly this time of year.<br />

Depending on your constitution, there are a variety of oils that can be used for oil massage but sesame oil (untoasted, organic if you can find it, I think Trader Joe's sells it) is considered the 'king of oils' in Ayurveda and is known for its warming qualities. Using about a 1/2 cup of oil begin the massage at the hands and feet and work towards your torso, this can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 if you have it, bringing attention to each part of the body. It is also beneficial to bring some attention to the soles of the feet, the ears and the scalp if you have time. Rinse off in the shower, using a very gentle soup (or a rubbing powder to help remove extra oil). If you can do this just once a week you will feel the benefits- a few times a week if you are feeling very depleted.<br />

Over the past few weeks I've had an opportunity to practice with one of my favorite teachers (that is, I found her videos at yogavibes.com and have been practicing from home but to the sound of her voice). Just hearing her voice was enough to enliven my practice and to remind me of the many lessons that my practice can teach me. When to work hard, when to relax, when to be adventorous and when to proceed with caution... our time on our mat can be a microcosm for the rest of our lives. The more we explore these things from the safety of our mats, the more those lessons begin to seep out into other aspects of our lives.<br />
<br />
These are the reasons I love the teachers I do- is because they remind me of these simple lessons that can be taken into so many different aspects of life. That is what keeps me coming back to my practice day after day, month after month, year after year (yikes, its been a lot of years!). Asana is such a powerful tool- it gives us a chance to see, on a smaller scale than the curve balls that life can throw at us, how we respond to challenges and helps reveal the truth- that we are all stonger than we ever imagined.<br />

Its incredibly hard to believe but the beginning of October marks our first year living in Portland. This past year has been a series of explorations in teaching, studying with new teachers, discovering new passions and adjusting to living a life outside of Los Angeles. In some ways very little has changed- I still love what I do and feel so fortunate to dedicate my life to the practice, study and teaching of Yoga- I still love cooking and geeking out about food. Something has shifted though, life in Portland feels so calm, so easy. I rarely feel the need to get a million things done and race through life. I feel happy here, at ease, like there is time to do most everything I want to do. I even have time to explore new projects and interests like keeping chickens (merely a thought now, hopefully in the next year), riding my bike to work, going to acting auditions again, and returning to dance classes. I had forgotten how much I loved these things, it is so inspiring and invigorating to go back to them.<br />
<br />
Perhaps it is a consequence of moving, perhaps it is just a natural evolution, but my practice and my approach to practice has changed over the past year as well. I find myself even more interested in the subtle, energetic workings of the practice, and I find myself varying what and how I practice depending on the day and how I am feeling. I feel so lucky to have found some teachers here that I really resonate with and can learn from- and am excited each time I roll out my mat. <br />
<br />
It took some time, probably about 6 months, but I am feeling connected to my voice and what I want to teach in a way here that I have only felt on rare occasions before. I have a better sense of what my strengths are as a teacher and what I need to work on, and I feel inspired to learn and grow in new ways. There are things I get excited about teaching each time I sit down to plan out my classes, and there are areas that I want to refine, to find more connection to in my own practice before I teach them.<br />
<br />
I had an unfounded fear that by moving to Portland I would somehow be missing out on my practice, that I wouldn't be 'progressing' or 'getting better' and that somehow I would fall behind. At the time this felt like a very real thing, that what my practice looked like somehow defined who I was- of course reflecting on this and writing it about makes it so clear that this was merely a clinging to what was, a fear of change. One of the greatest lessons I've learned since being here is that I have the power to let go of that fear, and that is a very liberating feeling.<br />
<br />
And so Portland, its been a great first year, may many more follow in its footsteps.<br />

Bellingham is a place near and dear to my heart. It is where I went to college, where I met my husband, and where I met some of my closest friends. This weekend we had the chance to go back and share in the wedding joy of 2 amazing and wonderful people. There was music, camping, dancing, great food- a true northwest wedding. It was so special to reconnect with old friends and have so many people from our past back together again. Events like this remind me how blessed I am to have so many wonderful people in my life. I feel full of love for everyone this week!<br />

It comes in various forms but I tend to see it most often in students of Vinyasa or Power Yoga style classes. When practiced properly and with attention to detail these poses can cause no pain and bring strength to the wrists and arms.<br />
<br />
There are a lots of different reasons that people feel pain or soreness in the wrists in these poses but most often it is most directly related to uneven weight in the hands which puts uneven pressure on the wrist joints. Sometimes it is merely a matter of bringing attention the issue, being conscious to spread the fingers evenly and press the hands flat. Other times it can be a result of tight shoulders, in which case it is important to take the time to allow for opening before revisiting these poses, there are plenty of ways to modify these poses while building strength and flexibility. Ultimately Yoga is not about performing perfect poses, it is an opportunity to listen to our bodies, be honest with ourselves about what is true for us and what we need on any given day.<br />

If you are feeling pain in the wrists try taking a step back and bringing the knees to the floor when lowering to chataranga or all the way to your mat for a little while, still finding a straight line from the knees to the shoulders and finding lift through the core- while you are practicing this way bring special attention to the weight in the hands, press the inner hand down into the mat (the space between the thumb and forefinger) so the entire palm is pressing into the floor. When you move into Downward Facing Dog try letting the hands turn out a little bit to make more room in the shoulders and see see if the hands can press more evenly from that position.<br />

Another action that can put pressure on the wrists is jumping from Ardha Uttanasana straight into plank pose and landing hard on the shoulders. While in the short term it might not cause pain over time it can put a tremendous amount of pressure on the wrists and the shoulders. When jumping back, be sure to engage the core and land softly, many lineages (Ashtanga vinyasa included) teach jumping straight into chataranga and landing with bent arms. Try working to this slowly by first getting used to landing the arms a little bit bent, then progressing to landing in full chataranga. <br />

While an asana practice may be intense from time to time, there is never a need for pain. Pain is the body's way of telling us we have gone too far, it is a way to make us listen. Desolation Sound is North of the Canadian Gulf Islands, across the Straight of Georgia- completely removed and absolutely amazing. We spent our days swimming, fishing, clamming, shrimping, snorkeling, sunning, kayaking, doing yoga on the rocky beach, did I mention swimming? I must have been in the water 4 hours a day- it was wonderful.<br />

When we were kids this came naturally to most people but as we grow up things seem to shift and it can be hard to access this fun, silly part of us. <br />

This month on the mat we are working on arm balances. Arm balances can help us tap into the fun, inqusitive, experimental and even empowering part of ourselves that is willing to fall, willing to just try and see what happens. Arm balances have never been a part of the practice that comes easily to me, and perhaps that is why I've come to enjoy them so much, they are humbling and ask us to not take ourselves to seriously.<br />

When given permission to play and see what happens, it becomes clear that it is the process of playing and not the pose itself, that brings us that feeling of contentment, satisfaction- these feelings are a part of the practice of Yoga. <i>Santosha</i>, a sanskrit term translating to contentment, is one of the Niyamas in Patanajali's Yoga Sutras. <br />

Love. Travel.) with this Yoga Blog. On the mat we often explore letting go of things we don't need to allow ourselves to live in the present moment, and, as with most parts of our practice, this applies to our life on the mat as well as off. You may also see the occasional cooking or urban homesteading post here. For the last few years I have kept these blogs separate but they are all, like yoga, a hugely important part of my life and I found so much overlap it stopped making sense to separate them. Rarely does it happen that we have a weekend off- no visitors, no commitments, nothing on the schedule. So when it does we try to take advantage. There is so much to explore within a short drive of Portland, the ocean is less than 2 hours away and the rivers and scenery to the east are equally stunning. Our most recent adventure took us out to Hood River. A super cute little town with delicious food, beer and lots of outdoor activities. It was a perfect day, raining in Portland but 80 once you left town. We were lucky enough to be in town the same day as a kiteboarding competition- miles and miles of boarders using the wind to carry them gracefully along the river. It was beautiful to see. <br />

Every single person we chatted with in town suggested we head to Double Mountain for some pizza and beer for lunch. It was worth every moment of the wait. The brick oven pizza was charred just perfectly and the ingredients were local and full of flavor. We ordered a pizza between the 2 of us, thinking we would have leftovers to take home... it never even made it to the 'to go' box before we ate it.<br />

Time away from home, even just a day, without email, phones or the usual 'to do' list running through my mind is the best medicine to let go of stress and burnout. It can seem a challenge, or seem like too much driving, or feel like there is too much to do- there is always a reason but there is a time and place to set those reasons aside and just get out of town. Even just a few hours on a river, near a waterfall, at the ocean, or in the mountains- whatever it is that feeds you and brings you back into yourself- it is always worth it. </div>

Summer is officially here- practicing indoors can seem so hard when the sun is out everyday! Especially here in the Northwest where sunny days are to be treasured. It is important to take advantage of these times, to enjoy the warmth of the sun and the joy it brings. With anything though, it is important to find a balance- with the extended days and nice weather comes playing sports outside, hiking, biking and being more active- that makes it even more important to take care of our bodies and to give our minds a chance to slow down. Getting to your yoga mat is a fantastic way to balance things out and keep them balanced out so we can keep going all Summer long. <br />
<br />
If you find yourself at BBQs in the evenings consider making your way to a class earlier in the day- with the daylight earlier in the morning you might find it is easier to get out of bed and once you've practiced you will be ready to take on your day. If you find yourself out of town on weekends taking day trips and other fun stuff look to your teachers and see if they teach any weekday classes that might work with your schedule. Changing your yoga schedule can be a great way to renew your practice. It feels so different to practice at different times during the day. Going away on vacation? Bring your mat with you and practice wherever you go- maybe find a studio or maybe just roll out your mat! <br />
<br />
Like anything in life- there will be ebbs and flows, times when you can't wait to get to your mat and times when a week goes by and you realize you haven't rolled your mat out 1 time. This is NOT something to beat yourself up over- it is an opportunity to start again, to renew your commitment. Just like we continue to return our awareness to our breath when we practice, we can continue to turn our attention to our practice when we notice that perhaps we have drifted.<br />
<br />
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to spend an evening with Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher well known for her teachings on loving kindness and compassion. We had time to chat, to practice and to explore the idea of compassion for others, as well as for ourselves. During our practice she kept bringing us back to our awareness- as the mind would wander she would gently remind us to come back. As I continued (again and again and again) to bring my attention back to my breathing I was reminded that this, the returning of the awareness, is the practice itself. Meditation or yoga, it is not about the poses or the how many Oms we chant, it is about being present, and when our attention drifts, bringing it back. <br />
<br />
So as you enjoy your Summer, continue to renew your practice, continue to bring your awareness back. That is what the practice is all about.<br />

A beautiful veggie garden, chickens, goats, even a baby goat not even 1 week old. I could have been there for hours, petting the goats, trying (without success) to stop them from eating my shoe laces, gathering fresh eggs and just watching the chickens peck around in the dirt. I didn't grow up on a farm, but somehow I feel connected to this life, there is so much joy to be had in just being in the presence of animals and earth. Just sitting and watching these animals as they interact with each other and their environment makes everything seem so simple- we humans can make things so confusing for ourselves! The goats and chickens just do what they do, they are simply wonderful.<br />

The first full month of Summer is here! This month on the mat we will be exploring backbending. Summer is natural time of opening- opening our hearts to friends and family for BBQs and outdoor events and enjoying the beauty and gifts of the great outdoors. Backbending helps us tap into our heart center, that part of us that is receptive to the world, that is responsible for giving and recieving love. With open hearts we are free to live a happpy fulfilling life. In the physical body, backbends strengthen the muscles along the spine and open the front of the body, they are perfect counterposes for sitting at a desk or driving in a car, or many of the other activities in our lives that round the spine forward. Backbends are also super useful for releasing tension in the neck and shoulders and de-programming our bodies from carrying tension and stress in these areas.<br /><br /> This year's Living Yoga Yogathon has come to an end- thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered their time. It was so wonderful to be involved in fundraising for such a worthy cause. There are challenges in our lives that we may never see coming- nothing in life is permanent- plans change- we become attached to things without even realizing how attached we are until it is taken away from us. These things all effect us beyond the psychological level- they effect our bodies- how we move and breath in the world. Last weekend I was lucky enough to workshop with Claudia Welch. The workshop was mostly about women's health and we spent a lot of time on the topic of prana. When prana is flowing easily we are in synch with life- healthy- vibrant and able to cope with what life throws at us. When prana gets stuck- either over time through habits or due to a stressful situation- we get stagnation. This stagnation can cause pain, feeling of sadness or depression, and even health problems.<br />

Lucky for all of us- there are ways to get prana moving! Yoga and meditation give us an opportunity to get in touch with our bodies, see where things may feel a bit stuck and get them moving. So, as you roll our your mat over the next week, pay attention- what are you needing from your practice, where- in your body or your life, are you feeling stuck? <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">For the past week or so I've been immersed in Max Strom's book "A Life Worth Breathing." Max helped open Exhale Center for Sacred Movement (before it was Exhale) in Los Angeles and is a teacher I have never had the pleasure of practicing with but he has always been on my radar. He teaches in Portland often and I hope to make it his next workshop. His book is simply lovely- touching on asana, meditation and pranayama and exploring the intentions behind the practice and where the true inner transformation comes into our lives. Here is a short quote- there are lots of great ones but what I really love about his writings and from what I hear how he teaches is the non attachment to the outcome of the pose itself- he is all about the process and what it can bring:</span><br />

I was told this week that I better get used to it- it will probably keep raining until June... and so, this week- I have been doing my best to enjoy the rain, to listen to what it might have to teach me. It seems fitting really, as I am planning workshops (see dates and times below) on transitioning into Springtime- the rain is a vehicle for transformation- washing away the old, nurturing new life and building a foundation where life can be sustained. It is a beautiful thing. And when it gets dark and gloomy out- a bit of time making something yummy things in the kitchen always brightens my day. I am lucky enough to have some family in California with a lemon tree and as a result, I now have a freezer full of lemon curd. It is delicious and tastes like sunshine.</span></i></span><br />

If you haven't yet signed up for a "Bloom Into Spring" workshop there is still time- it is going to be a super fun afternoon- we will practice some yoga, focusing on backbends and twists to help us transition out of Winter and into Spring. We will also do some singing (I've been practicing the Harmonium) and some breathwork. It is going to be uplifting and fun and will offer everyone tools to help move smoothly through times of transition. Oh yeah, and there will probably be some chocolate :) The first of the workshops is at Exhale on Sunday the 8th- the rest of the dates and times are listed below.</span><br />
