This last weekend I was fortunate enough to go visit some family Santa Ynez (just inland from Santa Barbara). In addition to some fabulous wine and food I got to spend some much needed time in nature. One my biggest challenges living in LA is finding a way to stay connected to the natural rhythms of nature. To be able to watch something grow or look out as far as I can and not see a single building. This weekend was a chance for me to do that.
Since the filming of the movie "Sideways" the Santa Ynez valley has become slightly overrun with tourists but once you leave downtown Los Olivos (by downtown I mean the 1 block in each direction from the central flagpole) you are surrounded by vineyards and horse pastures.
I have to say that possibly my favorite part of the weekend was the small amount of time I spent on my family's vineyard attaching the vines to the supports so that they can grow and (in 4 or 5 years) produce wine. I loved putting my hands in the dirt and just being with the earth.
While I was doing this I had a thought- my yoga practice is a little like a fine wine, becoming more complex with time.
