Pain vs. Sensation

I touch on this topic quite a bit in class but wanted to expand on it a little.  Pain in your yoga practice is not a good thing, sensation, on the other hand can be a sign that your body is opening and experiencing something new.  There are times that it can be hard to tell the difference but learning to do so is all part of becoming more aware and mindful of your body and what it needs.

Pain is your brain telling your body to back off to prevent injury.  Many times pain is very clear, sharp, hot and fast and you know right away to stop what you are doing, something like touching a hot iron.

Sensation is the stretch in your hamstrings as you move into your first downward dog, you can breath into it, it can be a very strong feeling but is different in nature than pain.  Sensation leaves room to explore- to find your 'edge'- a place where you feel your body working but can breath through it- if you past your edge you may feel pain.

All of this really comes down to honoring your body.  If you shy away from any sensation you will miss the opening and stretching that your practice has to offer, if you push too far you could find injury.  Listen to your breath, it will guide you to where you need to be.
