Swimming One Day in August- Mary Oliver

It is time now, I said,
for the deepening and quieting of the spirit
among the flux of happenings.

Something had pestered me so much
I thought my heart would break.
I mean, the mechanical part.

I went down in the afternoon
to the sea
which held me, until I grew easy.

About tomorrow, who knows anything.
Except that it will be time, again.
for the deepening and quieting of the spirit.

My Mom shared that poem with me a week or so ago and it has been lingering with me ever since.  Our practice is a time on our mats that we can 'deepen and quiet the spirit' but there are so many other chances in life to just get still and quiet and become present in the moment.  The salt water is one of these places for me, it seems to wash away all thoughts other than what is happening right now.  Perhaps that is why I have fallen so deeply in love with Scuba diving over the past year or so- I get a chance to be in the ocean for an extended period of time, not just watching the waves but actually existing in them.  It is a feeling unlike any other.

I came across this blog post while I was writing this morning, it seems the water is a popular theme today, if you have the time give it a read, it isn't very long and I really like the way he writes.

Happy 4th of July of everyone, have a lovely holiday!
